Wild Deer Antlers
Antlers are the fastest growing tissue known in the world. Antlers grow on the head of a male deer (also known as a Buck or Stag) each year. Their antlers shed, or fall off naturally, after the breeding season. Once shed the Stag instantly starts to regrow a new set of antlers, first in soft tissue (called Velvet) then gradually calcifying into fully hardened antler at around January each year, ready for the next breeding season.
Antlers are formed on only male members of the deer family, primarily as a function of sexual attraction and used as a weapon for fighting other males. Fallow Bucks/Stags (males) can grow to a size in excess of 80kg and does (females) to a size of 50kg. Red deer Stags can grow to a size in excess of 300kg and red hind (females) up to 150kg.
This annual antler growth cycle begins in response to increased daylight hours and the rate of growth is one of the fastest known types of tissue growth in mammals. These hard antlers are naturally shed and regrown each year with no human intervention and at Wild Antlers is a 100% cruelty free process.
Historically, antlers have been used by man in the late Palaeolithic and Medieval age to make tools, weapons, ornaments and toys as well as carvings and engraved designs for a range of uses.
Properties of Antler
The shed antler can vary greatly in shape, size and colour, depending on factors such as age, nutrition and genetics. No two pair of antlers are exactly the same.
Antlers are composed of the basic elements essential for animal health and well-being – calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, zinc and more.
One of the many advantages of the antler is that it will not splinter or snap like other bone material. The centre core of the antler is a dry, soft, honeycomb like material, similar to marrow in bone, holding many beneficial elements. The antler is 100% dry and shelf stable.
